Sociolinguistics & Literary Development - Consultant

Samina Khan is a Sociolinguist and Education Specialist with Manāra Policy & Practice, contributing expertise in minority language documentation, culturally responsive pedagogy, and education access in marginalized communities. Based in Gilgit, she brings over 15 years of experience spanning university teaching, teacher training, and social entrepreneurship across Northern Pakistan. Samina currently serves as Director of Human Resource Development at Karakoram International University and Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics & Literature, where she teaches core linguistics and literature courses, supervises research on local languages, coordinates academic seminars and conferences, and served as the first woman General Secretary of the Academic Staff Association. As a Master Trainer, she leads Teaching and Learning Enhancement Workshops for university faculty across Gilgit and Chitral, focusing on innovative pedagogy and classroom engagement, and trains education fellows in Baltistan, Nagar, and Diamer through a collaborative program with Aga Khan University and LUMS, strengthening pedagogical capacity for primary and secondary teachers in underserved regions. She is co-founder of Chapter One, the first women-led bookshop in Gilgit Baltistan, established to promote reading culture and intellectual discourse among youth. Through Chapter One, she organizes exhibitions for young artists, facilitates public discussions on gender-based violence, child abuse, and mental health, and provides philanthropic support to flood-affected communities in remote valleys. Her research focuses on minority languages, language documentation, language attitudes, and sociolinguistics, with particular attention to Burushaski and other languages of Northern Pakistan. She combines academic expertise with community engagement, working to preserve endangered languages through youth-led documentation projects and creating platforms for cultural and intellectual exchange. Samina specializes in designing teacher training programs that integrate linguistic diversity and cultural context, supporting educators in regions where multilingualism and cultural identity shape classroom realities. She is fluent in English, Urdu, Sindhi, and Burushaski. Samina holds a Master's degree in Linguistics from North Carolina State University as a Fulbright Scholar and a Master's degree in English Language, Literature and Linguistics from the National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad. She completed a fellowship at the Linguistic Institute of the Linguistic Society of America at the University of Michigan. At Manāra, she advises on language and heritage preservation strategies, culturally responsive education design, and initiatives that connect collective memory, linguistic diversity, and educational equity in Pakistan's mountain communities.
